KARNATAKA STATE LAWN TENNISASSOCIATION & ITS CLUB HOUSE. The Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association is one of its kinds in the country. Perhaps, it is the only State Tennis Association in the country, which has international class tennis facility with an arena having a seating capacity for more end 7000 spectators. What’s more, it also boasts of clubhouse, which has a gymnasium, restaurant, a pool table &swimming pool, facilities for indoor games, besides seven newly built air conditioned guest rooms.
The KSLTA has a hoary past, and goes back to 1930s, when Mysore State Lawn Tennis Association was established and the Association was registered in 1952. The Association shot into international prominence in 1970 when India-Australia tie was held in Bangalore. The historic event was held in Cubbon court, belonging to Bangalore Tennis Club. It was during that, time, the Mysore State Lawn Tennis Association, approached the Government to allot a land for the Association. With the generosity of the Bangalore Tennis Club the Cubbon Court was leased to the Association. In 1972, Bangaloe Club relinquished its hold on the Cubbon Park courts and State Association began to take steps to build a stadium.
The foundation stone for the Stadium in Cubbon Park was laid in 1972 by then Governor, Shri Dharam Vira and the Stadium was completed in 1976 and was inaugurated by then late chief Minister Mr. Devaraj Urs. The KSLTA ushered in a new millennium in 2000, when new set of office bearers, headed by the then Chief Minister, Shri. S.M. Krishna and as President and dynamic entrepreneur, Shri.C.S. Sunder Raju as secretary, and Shri. P.R.Ramaswamy as Joint Secretary, took charge of the Association. The new executive committee soon began implementing its Vision 2000 programme, with the aim of making KSLTA and Bangalore an international tennis destination. The Stadium was fully renovated at the cost Rs.2 crore with the sponsorship of Shri Vijay Mallya of the UB Group. It soon had four [04] synthetic courts, bucket seats in gallery for spectators; fully air conditioned lounge, change rooms, media room with internet and other facilities.
Besides catering to high end tour events, The KSLTA also took initiative to develop grassroots tennis, by having mini tennis clinics and various high performance tennis coaching to groom the young talent in the State. It also encourage youngsters, who perform well at the National and international events with cash awards. Besides upgrading facilities for tennis, KSLTA now has a full-fledged club house, with multi cuisine restaurant, bar, swimming pool, gym; facilities for indoor games and seven fully furnished A.C guest rooms. And no wonder, the KSLTA is now a much sought after destination not only for tennis, but for complete relaxation and enjoyable social gatherings.
