Dominant Khumoyun Sultanov outplayed a largely subdued Bogdan Bobrov of Russia in a lopsided ITF Kalaburagi Open final at the Chandrashekhar Patil Stadium courts here on Sunday.
Top-seeded Sultanov ran the Russian ragged en route to a 6-2, 6-1 victory in exactly an hour. This was the Uzbekistan player’s fifth title of the season and the second in India. He won in Chandigarh earlier in the year.
The crowd came in large numbers anticipating a titanic clash between the top two seeds. It appeared so for the first couple of games, but once Sultanov broke an error-prone Bobrov in the sixth game of the opening set, the finale fizzled into a no-contest.
The second-seeded Bobrov, winner of the doubles title on Saturday, seemed to struggle with his movement on the court. Playing both doubles and singles in the hot sun the entire week probably took a toll on the 27-year-old.
Even his reliable backhand seemed to desert him. Sultanov wasn’t complaining, he just stayed in the rally and waited for Bobrov to do the rest. The top seed did come up with winners, balls that the Russian would have chased on any other day.
He just threw up his hands in despair and had a wry smile each time Sultanov came up with those winners off both flanks. The struggle with his first serve only compounded his woes.
Sultanov broke Bobrov again in the eighth game to seal the first set. In the next set, the Russian hit a drive volley wide at breakpoint in the second game to hand the advantage to the Uzbek, who is ranked close to 200 places above Bobrov.
The focused Sultanov earned another break in the fourth game before closing out the set and match in the seventh game.
“This win was important for me as I was defending points,” said an elated Sultanov, who took home a cheque for $3,600 and earned 25 ATP ranking points. “It feels nice to win again in India and end the season on a high.”
Bobrov had to settle for a cheque of $2,120 and 16 ATP ranking points.
Result (Final): Singles: 1-Khumoyun Sultanov (Uzb) bt 2-Bogdan Bobrov (Rus) 6-2, 6-1.
