Bengaluru, Sept 2: Sanchit Sudhir Rau and Varunya CN scripted minor upset victories, albeit in contrasting styles enroute to their maiden U-14 titles in the Boys and Girls categories respectively of the FSA AITA Talent Series-3 U-14 tennis tournament held under the aegis of KSLTA and conducted by Fortune Sports Academy here on Thursday.

While Sanchit, seeded seventh overcame the fifth seed Srikar Doni 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-5, the second seeded Mysore lass Varunya dominated the proceedings to see the back of top seed Mahika Reddy in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Sanchit, the 13-year-old student of Presidency School (North) held his nerves when he needed the most as he fought his way back in all the sets of the match before emerging as the champion. Down 1-3 in the opening set, he won five games in a row to win the set, thanks to some superb forehand winners. The second set saw momentum turning either side with every game as Srikar, serving for the set at 5-4, lost two match points and the game as well. Sanchit serving for the match at 6-5, lost his serve and the set was decided via tie-break which Srikar won at 3. Sanchit was once again 1-5 down in the decider before mustering the needed courage to fight back as he won six games on a trot to clinch the set and the match that lasted for a little over an hour and half.

In the Girls final, Varunya, the 14-year-old student of St. Joseph’s Central, Mysore went 4-0 up in the first set after breaks in the first and third games. However she lost a bit of concentration which cost her serve as Mahika won two games and threatened to win more but it was a tad too late in the set. A similar story followed in the second set with Varunya going 5-0 up. Her opponent could manage to win two games before the visitor served out for the set.
