Unheralded Sumit stuns Bhambri, storms into the finals of Bengaluru Open
Bengaluru, Nov 24: Unheralded Sumit Nagal of India brushed aside compatriot and seed No.3 Yuki
Bhambri in straight sets to storm into the finals of the US $ 100,000 Bengaluru Open at the KSLTA
Stadium here on Friday.
The 20-year- old Nagal won 6-4, 6-0 in just 67 minutes to set up a title tilt with Jay Clarke of Great Britain
who quelled the challenge of Tsung-Hua Yang of Teipei 6-3, 4-6 in the other semifinals. Both Nagal and
Clarke will be vying for their maiden title.
Meanwhile in the doubles final, the top seeded pair of Divij Sharan of India and Mikhail Elgin of Russia
brushed aside the challenge of Sabanov brothers - Ivan and Matej of Bosnia 6-3, 6-0 to lift the doubles
title. With this victory, Divij breaks into the top 50 in world rankings in doubles.
Sumit after stunning the top seed Blaz Kavcic in the quarterfinals yesterday, oozed with confidence as he
stepped on to the court. Bhambri looked a bit jaded. With both of them holding on to their serves, Nagal
achieved a break in the sixth game to go 4-2 up, thanks to his opponent who committed several
unforced errors. Bhambri returned the favour in the next game and both traded breaks for the next
three games as Nagal pocketed the first set 6-4.
“I went into the game that I have nothing to lose against Yuki because he is looking to break into the top
100 and was under pressure. I think I was more aggressive today than my usual self and covered the
court very well, thanks to my fitness coach Yash who has kept me in good stead during these last three
days of strenuous games,” said Nagal.
If Nagal has shown sparks of brilliance in the opening set, he built on it in the second. Bhambri never
looked confident as his younger opponent didn’t give him a semblance of a chance to recover. “I knew if
I gave him chances of long rallies, it would build his confidence and a chance to comeback. Hence I tried
to kill it at the earliest,” said Nagal. Earning a break in the second game, Nagal broke Bhambri’s serve in
the fourth and the sixth to wrap up the issue.
“I am also surprised by my victory. I did not think it would be that easy, it just happened,” said the
finalist. “I have played with him (Clarke) in the Junior Tour and I know about his game and I would adopt
the same strategy as yesterday and today,” said a confident Nagal.

Earlier, in the first semifinal, Clarke and Yang began in the right earnest keeping a fast pace until the
former broke Yang’s serve in the fourth game to go 3-1 up and both held their respective serves until
Clarke took the first set 6-3. However in the second set, Yang took control of the game and with breaks
in the second and the fourth game, went 4-0 up. However, Clarke has other plans in mind and broke his
opponents serve in the next game and won six games in a row to clinch the match.
